Why Nigerian and Watford striker Emmanuel Denis did not make the Super Eagles’ 28-man squad for AFCON

FRI 31 DEC, 2021-theGBJournal- The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) announced the 28-man squad for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021) Friday, with the inform Nigerian born Watford based striker Emmanuel Denis  missing from the list, to the surprise and consternation of many, and in particular the football authorities.

But it has emerged that Nigeria missed the deadline to request for Denis’s release from Watford to join the Nigerian squad.

Nigeria had expressed frustration at Watford for ‘’baring fangs’’ in not confirming Denis release.

Watford Manager, Claudio Renieri clarified the dispute, claiming that both Nigeria and his club had ‘’thrashed out’’ the issues and blaming Denis’s non release on the recent changes in Nigeria’s Super Eagles coaching staff.  

Renieri also argued that the refusal to allow Denis out of squad was not intended to disrespect the AFCON.

Meanwhile,  6 players in camp already as at Thursday. They include; Chidera Ejuke (CSKA Moscow, Russia), Daniel Akpeyi (Kaizer Chiefs, South Africa), Sadiq Umar (UD Almeria, Spain), Olisa Ndah (Orlando Pirates, South Africa), John Noble(Enyimba FC), Taiwo Awoniyi (Union Berlin, Germany).
